Major Landslide Hits Himachal’s Kinnaur, 13 People Reported Dead and Around 40 Feared Buried Under Debris

Today, two people were reported dead in district Kinnaur of Himachal Pradesh and 40 feared to be buried under debris after a major landslide.

According to the sources, after the landslide some vehicles including a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus carrying over 40 passengers and a truck were trapped in the rubble, indicating around 30 people got buried.

Deputy Commissioner Kinnaur, Abid Hussain Sadiq told news agency Press Trust of India (PTI)  that the landslide took place around 12 pm on the Reckong Peo-Shimla Highway near Nugulsari in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district.

The local police reported about 30 people were trapped out of which ten people have been rescued including the driver of the HRTC bus. Himachal’s Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said that 27 personnel from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 52  from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) were sent to their rescue.

I’ve directed the police and the local administration to carry out rescue operations. NDRF has also been put on alert. We have received information that one bus and a car could have been hit. We are waiting for detailed information.

The CM further added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Jairam Thakur about the ongoing dreadful situation and assured every possible help.

Apparently, the landslide conditions have gradually increased in areas of Himachal Pradesh over the past few weeks because of heavy rainfall occurrences in the region during the monsoon.

Update: August 12, 2021


As of now 13 bodies have been rescued and sent to CHC-Bhawanagar for medical treatment. Meanwhile death toll rises to 13 , said officials.
